I agree and I'm sick of people calling bands like Fall Out Boy and My chemical romance emo! Its like, haven't they ever heard of Pop-Rock? and I feel bad for the real emos. Because after MTV decided emo was the new fad, we had all these people trying to act the part and cutting themselves so they can look cool. Thats another reason you can tell a poser from an original emo: The posers all look the same because they're trying to be the steriotypical emo. The originals usually now go by the term scene because those posers disgraced the term emo. People Nowadays are idiots and are like sheep.

Most people who do 'slag off' emo are those who assume that it means that the people who are seen as emo are 'cutters'. If you do some research on it you'll find that the term was popular in the 80's. Emocore or 'Emotional Hardcore' was started in Washington DC and its name comes from the preformers who would suddenly become 'emotional' during their preformance. Much like symbols through the ages the word 'emo' has been distorted and as time passed its meaning has changed greatly by outside influences. For example the penticle, when people think of it they think of 'devil worship' which isn't the case and we should all know that by now. There isn't anything wrong with being 'emotional' at times. As for the 'emo scene' its all about stereotypes set by people [as usual] and can bet viewed in any way you wish I suppose. Just remember that it all started with the music and not with a fashion statement.

People don't really slag off emo, well, no more than they slag off 'chavs' or 'preppies' or any other stupid teenage stereotype. The reason that emo has been brought to attention is due to questions like this one! Emos constantly complain about being descriminated against, when in fact, nobody brings it up except for them. I don't fit in any stereotype, but enjoy going to gigs where there are many 'emos' there and I swear, they bring up the fact that they are emo. Most people honestly don't care enough to regard it. I go to a private school, and many of my friends get called 'preppy' but they find 'emos' really hot - as do I, but the 'emo' will always automatically assume that we hate them and discriminate against us before we have a chance to even start conversation. And to be honest, the depressive element is somewhat detatched to the fashion statement and music - Christina Aguilera can sing about a broken heart but people won't brand her attention seeking, and you can bet her fans won't start cutting herself. Don't get me wrong - many teenagers are very genuinely depressed and may self harm, and consider themselves outcasts - yet this same teenager might dress in a completely conventionally, conformist emo way. It's more likely that the teenager became emo because they are a fragile person who saw a trend that seemed to epitomise them and joined. Not the other way round.

Back in my day (80's) we were goth. And the kids who started the whole thing were punk. And at least you could tell the boys from the girls back then. We were all about being NON-conformists. When the hell did everyone become "emo"? I can't tell any of you little brats apart. You all look like anorexic little depressed waif-clones. And ALL of today's music sucks!
